How to Make the Perfect Scones

Scones

Scones are a delicious and versatile pastry that can be enjoyed for breakfast, lunch, or dessert. They are made with a simple dough of flour, butter, sugar, and baking powder, and they can be flavored with a variety of ingredients, such as fruit, nuts, or spices.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  5. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, or until smooth.
  7. Roll out the dough to a 1-inch thickness and cut into rounds using a 2-inch biscuit cutter.
  8. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and brush with the beaten egg.
  9. Sprinkle the scones with the 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Tips

  • For a more tender scone, use cold butter and milk.
  • To prevent the scones from becoming tough, do not overmix the dough.
  • If you are adding fruit or nuts to the scones, add them after the dough has been mixed.
  • Scones can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

Enjoy!
