Homemade American White Bread Recipe

American White Bread

This homemade American white bread recipe is easy to follow and produces a delicious, fluffy loaf of bread.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it in half.
  7. Shape each half of the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  8. Cover the loaf pans with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  10. Bake the loaves for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. Remove the loaves from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
  • To make a crusty loaf of bread, sprinkle the top of the loaves with cornmeal before baking.
  • To make a flavored bread, add 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 cup of chopped sun-dried tomatoes, or 1/2 cup of chopped fresh herbs to the dough.
